Time is a funny thing. It’s the one thing that is completely even across all people. It doesn’t matter what your educational level is, your financial standings, or even your age.
Everybody gets the same 24 hours of each day. We certainly use these hours differently.
How is it then, that some people seem to get far more done than others each day?
Is there some secret hour machine that spits out more hours?
I don’t think so.
I Don’t Have the Time to Start an Online Store
One of the biggest things we hear when people talk about starting their online store, is that they don’t have the time. Nonsense. Make time.
I understand where this comes from, but this is an excuse.
Most of the hours in your day are non-negotiable.
Most of us don’t get to decide what we do with the largest chunk of our days. We have to make a living, or raise our children, or care for others, or all these at the same time.
These are hours that we can’t control.
These are reserved hours and some people have more reserved hours than others.
For Example: If you commute an hour or so to work each day, you may be losing 3 reserved hours driving. This sucks. There is no way around that sunken time.
I could debate that you can still use your reserved hours wisely and the guys at Money Crashers certainly made the point, but let’s focus on the low hanging fruit.
Elective Hours are Where You Make Time
The elective hours are the ones that you have when you get home from work or when you put your children to sleep. These also include hours early in the morning or on weekends.
These are your hours. You decide what you are going to do with these hours.
There are lots of elective hours. You are familiar. These are the ones that usually look like this.
But that’s not the best use of time. While you believe you are relaxing, you are squandering your elective hours.
- You have no impact on who is going to win the next Bachelor, nor should you care.
- You probably can’t sing as well as the next American Idol and again, you shouldn’t care.
This is mindless entertainment. I understand it makes you feel at ease, but this is not how you get ahead. This is not how you build a business.
Use Your Elective Hours to Build Your Online Store
These elective hours are when you can start building your online store. These hours are when businesses are built on the side. They lead to financial independence and a feeling of accomplishment.
I have the luxury of working on the things I love during the day. I have an incredible team of people and we build cool things for others. I also am able to build my own stuff during the work day.
But my wife doesn’t.
My wife raises our children, takes care of the house, handles the laundry, feeds us, and handles a half a dozen other thins in our life.
By the end of the day she is Zonked. She is dead tired and when I arrive home at 7:30 or so, so am I.
The last thing we want to do is work. But this is where you build a side business. You don’t have to work all night long, but you have time.
This is time that you can invest to build your future.
We are no longer watching TV or laying on the couch. We are working. We spend about 1-2 hours 3 to 4 days a week working on her site.
This is in addition to my wife squeezing in other elective hours during the day.
Gone are the afternoon catnaps she would squeeze in.
You Have to Want It To Go For It
Everybody has responsibility in some fashion and everybody has the same 24 hours in their day. Making your future a priority is up to you.
Only you, can make the choice to build your online store. If you don’t want it, it’s not going to happen. See how badly Bobs wife wanted to start her business. Take an hour or two of each night and devote it to working and you can make it happen.
You can’t do everything. Pick and choose and outsource some if you have to.
There is never an optimal time.
Does this sound familiar?
- As soon as I do this, I’ll start.
- When I’m done with that and settled, I’ll start.
Stop making excuses and start now. There is never a better time to start than today. It’s going to take time to build your brand and build your store.
My number 1 recommendation is to believe in yourself and just start.
